The Confounded Compass
An Adventure in Meandering
Hello, and welcome to The Confounded Compass! My name is Greg and my partner in this new endeavor and more importantly, in life, is my husband Keith.
The idea behind this project is to capture Keith and I continuing to do what inspires us the most: traveling. The undeniable highlights of our lives together have been the trips we have taken, from smaller day or weekend trips to grand vacations. We have been fortunate enough to do both, and these trips, big and small, bring us the most joy.
Keith and I have already completed significant journeys prior to this. We have been together for just over 25 years, and we set a goal for ourselves of having visited all 50 states by our 25th anniversary. We accomplished this in November 2024 (our official anniversary month) in Hawaii. We have also traveled a bit of Europe, Canada and the Caribbean. 2024 was also the year of my 60th birthday. I am now 61 and Keith is 57.
We feel we are at a crossroads now, ready to tackle the challenges of traveling while aging. All of us know that aging can be a challenge in everything we do, and certainly, it makes us rethink our ways of traveling as well. Keith and I decided that the best way to accomplish this is to bring you all along to keep us motivated! We also both worked for years in the hotel industry and therefore we bring some insight that has helped us with our journeys before. We will review some past vacations and road trips, share our planning for upcoming adventures and mention some tips and tricks we learn along the way. We will also talk about safety while traveling, from both an aging point of view as well as an LGBT one.
Why name it The Confounded Compass? Because traveling, frankly, to even the most seasoned traveler, can be confounding. Travel, like life, can change on a dime. We want to share the wondrous moments of course, but also how we navigate the challenges as they come along.
Why an Adventure in Meandering? We have found some of our most cherished memories when traveling and we step out of the schedule and be spontaneous. Also, the journey itself to the destination has often brought some of the most fun we have had on our trips. We do tend to meander a bit off the beaten path at times, which can create an experience of its own.
So come laugh, roll your eyes, sigh heavily and relish the wonder and awe with us as we embark on the journey of traveling into our later years. Happy New Year and come be Confounded with us!
